Wilhelm Dorpfeld was born in Germany & one of the most
famous archaeologists of his time. His many Greek excavations led to inspire
the modern Olympic Games & the Greek government hired him as an
architectural consultant on the Acropolis. He, along with another well known
excavator Heinrich Schliemann discovered ancient Troy & it was this that led
to the belief that the Odysseus Palace (Homer's Ithaka's King) is placed at
Nydri & not Ithaka. It was Dorpfelds wish to be buried close to Nidri & his
grave lies near to the popular church of Aghios Kyriaki |
